Hamsters the Escape Artists

13th August 2008

I guess every hamster owner has had an experience of their hamster trying to escape, successfully or with failure. I’ve learned my lesson from here & there, so now I always:

  1. Double check that every door is closed properly.
  2. If the door is loose, fasten it with an extra lock (a birdcage lock makes a good one).
  3. All openings (including openings for extensions & tubes) are securely fastened.

Here are some other owners’ experiences:

After watching that, you should know that buying a cage specifically made & marketed for other animals, e.g. guinea pigs, chinchillas, will only give your hamsters an opportunity to escape through the gaps between the bars (especially true for Roborovski hamsters).

I would say Syrian hammies are smarter. They can jump, balance and climb very well. Amazing tricks they do.

my syrian (nikole) is always exploring ways of escaping while my current dwarf (neko) is more homely – he can’t wait to go home when it’s outside! hehe
better not show my hams these vids or it’d give them ‘ideas’ :D

    Haha!
These Syrians of mine are weeirddd!
They can’t wait to go outside of their cage, but once I take them out to the garden, they just sit still in 1 place.

Oh? Ippo, then your syrians are great for photoshoots. If Hamlet is out of her cage, she panicks and all hell break loose. :D
