Weekend Scare
10th November 2009
This past Friday as I was about to give Baby Hamster his steroid gel, I noticed that there’s blood coming out of his penis. I looked around his cage & also found a drop of blood in the bedding. Good thing the Animal Clinic was open on Saturdays for emergency. Vet said that it could either be urinary prostate infection or tract infection .. I hope it’s the latter. He’s on Baytril for 10 days.
I don’t know what is going on, but it seems like almost all my hamsters are coming down with something …. *sigh* & I don’t like writing about sick hamsters either.

Oh dear. How old is Baby Hamster? Hope he gets well soon.

I don’t know his exact age, but I adopted him early April of 2008 .. so he’s been with me for 1 year & 7 months. He’s got to be at least 1 year & 8-9 months old. Him & Daddy Hamster are my first Syrians, so I really don’t know what to expect as they’re getting older. I’m suspecting that Baby Hamster is actually the father & older than Daddy Hamster.

How is BB Hamster now?
Syrians should generally have a longer life span than the dwarfs so 2yrs is consider still prime.
Hope he don’t have to constantly consume baytril. The vet told me that while Baytril is an antibotic, it can also harm the intestine of the ham by killing the good bateria & leads to diahorrea. I’m still so scare to use it.

He’s doing fine now & he’s up & about like normal.
I know, he’s been on & off Baytril quite often these past couple of months. You’re right about how Baytril kills off the good bacteria, my vet has explained to me the same thing; that’s why when Winnie was on Baytril I remember that the vet gave Winnie Benebac. I’m also afraid that the effectiveness of Baytril might wear off.
I should supplement BH’s diet with Benebac & yogurt to replace the good bacteria that’s being killed by Baytril.

I read that when you give hamsters any form of antibiotics (like baytril), plain/unflavoured yogurt needs to be given 6 hours before each antibiotic dosing. It’s important to give the yogurt b4 and not after the antibiotic. I hope BH gets better!

Yes Wiffy you’re right. If any good bacteria is given before the antibiotic, the antibiotic will just kill them.
